Under Pressure

In dealing with the physical concept of pressure let’s consider it from the perspective of the three states of matter and look at examples for each.

Solids

If we just consider the factors involved in making standing and walking comfortable then the pictures above right remind us that women wearing high heels often complain about sore feet. So why should the high heels create more issues than the other shoe shown. Well the images to the right indicate the factors involved in creating this issue. Areas of red indicate areas of high pressure with one of those being where the heel appears. This is because the surface area of the high heel is very small and so there is a lot of weight directed through this point. Contrast that with the pressure image of the flat shoe and we can see how the weight is spread over a wider area.

Seed Dispersal Game

An excellent little resource. This game looks at how plants have evolved seeds, and how they get dispersed by the wind, and compares how easily different designs of seed can colonise a landscape. There is also an associated quiz. This game is based on Flash so will not work on mobile devices.
